Districts and Charters will learn the basics of operating and monitoring charter schools.

Stefanie Farland is the Founder and Director of Collaborative Solutions for Charter Authorizers (CSCA). CSCA provides guidance and support to charter school authorizers. Prior to CSCA, Ms. Farland was a senior policy consultant with the California School Boards Association. She received an undergraduate degree from California State University, Fresno and a Teaching Credential from California State University, Sacramento.

ELD: MOVING BEYOND COMPLIANCE: RAISING THE PERFORMANCE OUTCOME FOR EL STUDENTS

Presented by SCCOE: Yee Wan, Ed.D. and Mat Espinosa

This session explores how to abide by new compliance regulations while navigating the English learners road map and reach the ultimate goal of helping english learners.

MOUs - THE MYTHS AND THE FACTS

Presented by Gail Grelly, Esq.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) will explored and the purpose clarified.

Prior to becoming the Director of the Charter Schools with the Alameda County Office of Education, Gail Greely was the Charter Schools Office Coordinator for the Oakland Unified School District.  She was also an elected school board member for City of Alameda.  Ms. Greely received her undergraduate degree from Stanford and a JD from Columbia University School of Law.

THE INS AND OUTS OF MONITORING AND OVERSIGHT

Presented by David Patterson, MA, Ed.D.

Aspects of charter school monitoring and oversight will be reviewed from the perspective of both the authorizer and the charter.

​

Dr. Patterson has over three decades of experience creating, managing and assisting in the development of high-performing schools. He has served as a Charter School Executive Director, the Director of Charter Schools for the Alameda Office of Education, and is currently a Board Member for the Placer County Board of Education and Director of the Charter Authorizers Regional Support Network (CARSNet).  Dr. Patterson received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, a MA from The George Washington University and a Ed.D from the University of Southern California.

THE MEANING OF PROP 39

Presented by Elizabeth Mori, Esq.

What exactly does Prop 39 mean for districts and charters?  This intricate partnership will be delved into during this session.

 

Elizabeth B. (Lisa) Mori, Esq is a partner at Fagen Friedman & Fulfrost LLP. Ms. Mori counsels and represent public school and community college districts guiding them in the all areas for school law.  She received her undergraduate degree from the University of California Santa Barbara and a JD in law from the University of San Diego School of Law.

As the Superintendent of the Campbell Union School District (retired), Dr. Eric Andrew oversaw both charter and standard public schools. Dr. Andrew obtained an undergraduate degree from La Verne College, a Masters in Education from California State Polytechnic University - Pomona and a Ed.D. from the University of La Verne.

Luis Carrillo, now retired, was the Principal at Rod Kelley Elementary School. Mr. Carillo obtained his undergraduate and masters degree from Santa Clara University. 

James Dent, M.Ed.

James Dent is the Chief Academic  Officer at Navigator Schools.  His career took him from Costa Rica, Colombia  where he was an ESL teacher to his current position.  Mr. Dent obtained an undergraduate degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara and a M.Ed. from San Jose State University.

Teresa Marquez, MA

Teresa Marquez is the Director for Instruction for the East Side Union High School District.  She obtained an undergraduate degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz and a Masters in Educational Leadership and Administration from San Jose State University.

Keyur Shah, MA

Keyer Shah is the principal at ACE Charter High School. Mr. Shah received an undergraduate degree from Columbia University and obtained a MA from Stanford University.

LEVERAGING TECHNOLOGY AND PARTNERSHIPS TO ACHIEVE STUDENT OUTCOMES

Technology has become an integral part of daily life.  Harnessing technology to be an asset to your lesson plan and not a deterrent is the focus of this session.

Kevin Bock, MA

Kevin Bock is the Executive Director for Summit Public Schools: Denali. He is a seasoned educator for both charter and district schools. Mr. Bock obtained his undergraduate degree from Yale University and Masters in Education from Stanford University's Graduate School of Education.  

Raquel Kusunoki, MA

Raquel Kusunoli is the Director of Elementary Education at the Milpitas Unified School District.  Her experiences in the classroom  provided a basis for developing Blended Learning program.  Ms. Kusunoli obtained her undergraduate degree from San Jose State University and a masters from Santa Clara University.

Chin Song M.Ed., Ed.D.

Chin Song is the Director of Technology for the Milpitas Unified School District.  Previously,  he was a teacher in Fremont and worked at Cisco. Dr. Song obtained his undergraduate degree and a Masters of Education from San Jose State University. In addition, he has a Doctorate in Education from the University of California, Berkeley.

Jonathan Stewart, MA

Jonathon Stewart is the Executive Director of Summit Public Schools: Tahoma.  His career spans from charter schools in Los Angeles to San Jose.  Mr. Stewart obtained both his undergraduate degree and masters from the University of California, Berkeley.

FISCAL OVERSIGHT FOR CHARTER SCHOOLS

Presented by Matt Phillips, CPA

Unravels the who, what, when, where and why of fiscal oversight for both authorizers and charters. 

​

Matt Phillips, CPA is the Director of Management Consulting Services for the School Services of California (SSC). He supports districts with fiscal-related matters including budget reviews, salary schedule analyses, organizational reviews, and negotiations. Mr. Phillips presents workshops on a variety of topics including the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP), budgeting, and auditing. He is Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Chief Business Officer (CBO) certificated and received his undergraduate degree from the California State University, Chico.

CREATING A CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE ENVIRONMENT

No child is the same. This double session discusses the challenges and opportunities presented to educators with students of varied cultures, social statuses and financial circumstances. It will options so your school can be responsive to every child's unique needs.

Angie Barfield is the Student Intervention and Prevention Coordinator for the Fresno County Office of Education.  Her career is focused on all children succeeding academically, socially and emotionally.  Ms. Barfield obtained a undergraduate degree and MA from Fresno Pacific University.

Parent engagement is a challenge every school experiences.  Programs, methods and results of parent involvement are shared during this session.

Marie Gil, MPA/HSA

Marie Gil is the Regional Director for Rocketship Education.  Her eclectic career provides her with the experience and knowledge to successfully build supportive communities.  Ms. Gil received her undergraduate degree from the University of San Francisco and a MPA/HSA  from the University of San Francisco - Masagung Graduate School of Management.​

Angelina Ramos

Angelina Ramos is the Director of Community Engagement for ACE Charter Schools, focusing on School Culture and Parent Leadership. Mrs. Ramos received her Psychology and Biology degrees from Santa Clara University.

Ensuring that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education can be a daunting task.  Current methods don't always achieve the desired goals. A new approach to Title I programs is showing promising results.  Explore these new ideas.

Michael Gallagher, MA, Ed.D

Dr. Michael Gallagher is the Deputy Superintendent of the Sunnyvale School District. As a native of the the Bay Area, his education and career has been based here.  Dr. Gallagher obtained an undergraduate degree and a double Masters from Santa Clara University. He went on to receive his Ed.D. from San Francisco State University.

Alia Wilson

Alia Wilson is the Communications Coordinator for the Sunnyvale School District.  She began her career as a newspaper reporter who took those skills to the school district.  Ms. Wilson obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz.

San José Unified School District will share their process of working with the San José Federation of Teachers in developing evaluation processes.

Jackie Zeller is the Associate Superintendent, Division of Instruction at San José Unified School District. She began her tenure at the District over 30 years ago as a math teacher and advanced to administration.  Ms. Zeller received her undergraduate degree and Masters in Special Education, Learning Disabilities from the University of Missouri- Columbia. In addition, she obtained her Administrative Credential from National University.

Greg Callaham is the Director of Social and Emotional Learning at Alpha Public Schools.  As Assistant Principal at Alpha: Blanca Alvarado Middle School, he worked with teachers in developing this highly-successful program integrating both physical and educational technics.  Mr. Callaham obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and a Masters of Education at the High Tech High Graduate School of Education.
